I was woken this morning to call 96 for the SRFD at just about 4:40 am. The call came in as MVA, Car vs. Semi hiway #1 10 km west of Strathmore in the Westbound lanes.
Past history show's that anything vs. semi at hiway speeds is going to result in bad things. So, I expected the worst as I headed to the hall.
Sounds bad huh? here's what really happened. Some guy from Sask. was heading east in the westbound lanes in his economy car. He crests a hill and is faced with a full sized SUV. Both drivers do evasive manouvers but still manage to tag each other with about 6 inches of each others vehicle. The SUV with more mass and a more lucent driver makes out better, but both spin out of control and hit the guard rail.
When we arrive Police are not yet on scene, and the medics have both drivers in the bus. both are reported as green (green=good). We close the road and wait for RCMP... a quick investigation, and we clear the debris from the #2 lane and re-open the hiway. We get to play traffic control until shortly after 07:00...
This is ok for a couple of reasons. First we recently purchased a VMSB (Variable Message Sign Board) for one of our bush trucks, so we were in a good posistion to give great advance warning to the early morning commuter traffic. Secondly, attending incidents on the highway provides a great stream of revenue.
It works something like this: Alberta Transportation has defined an approved rate for each type of vehicle which attends incidents on numbered highways. The number varies, but is between $300 and $800 per hour for each truck. You do the math... 1 tanker/pumper, 1 rescue, 1 traffic control truck from 4:45 to 7:30. That's about 3 hours X 3 trucks X $500 per hour. A tidy bill of $4500 goes to Alberta infrastructure.
And herein lies the reason that every volunteer fire department in Alberta wants to provide rescue services on the hiways.
We do about 40 MVA's each year on the hiways. 40 X ~$2000 average, and that's $60,000 per year in our virtual pockets.....
Again. That's why every fire department wants to do this work... Do you see where I'm going with this????? You know who really would like a piece of this action.
If you know who gets it, we all shake hands and turn over the keys to the fire trucks....
There. I've outed the issue... No one of influence will ever see this, so I'm not going to lose sleep over it.
Back to where I started. The stupidity of people is still amazing me after all these years. This is the 4th driver who was going the wrong way on a divided hiway in as many years. I don't knwo what you have to do to get that disoriented that you end up in that situation. It would make for an interesting interview. Don't you think?

A funny story.
Ok, not really so funny. But I feel compelled to tell it anyway.
There's a guy. He alegedly steals a car, drives away really fast as to avoid getting arrested. Comes to a twisty part of a strange road going way too fast and leaves the roadway. Not wanting to crash in the lake in a stolen car, he overcorrects and launches his car across the road where it rolls, and lands in a slough. Car catches on fire, and driver climbs out and is found 20 feet away unconcious and paralyzed from hips down.
We do a search for the guy, traffic control, and land stars. The fire burns itself out.
Crazy...

From Tuscany...
More about my weekend soon.
In the mean time, a friend who is traveling in Italy sent me this. Enjoy.
In the mean time, a friend who is traveling in Italy sent me this. Enjoy.
Hello from the beautiful countryside of Tuscany.
Well, last night, it was all about being spoiled rotten. We stayed at
this brand new spa hotel overlooking San Gimignano in Tuscany. Our view
from the room showed the patchwork countryside of olive groves,
vineyards, maple trees changing color, & red tiled rooftops. We started
with cappucinos & Italian beer just outside of the swimming pool area,
then moved up to our suite complete with luxurious linens, a jacuzzi
bathtub, & plush robes for everyone. Breakfast this morning was
spectacular, with scrumptious coldcuts & cheeses, a variety of breads,
jams & pate's, assorted juices, coffees & cappucinos, plus the more
traditional bacon, eggs, toast, fresh fruits & vegetables. Yum ... but
then we could all barely stay awake for the drive to Florence!
After a panoramic view of the city from Piazza Michelangelo, we changed
direction towards Pisa ... with many stops along the way at Italian
cycling shops & "Pelletterias" (Italian leather good stores). Our time
in Pisa coincided with dusk as the colors of the famous Leaning Tower
changed from the bright white marble with the oranges & reds of the
setting sun.
Tonight we are staying in a family hotel with a room overlooking the
Mediterranean Sea. Hopefully we'll get a chance to browse through some
of the Marina shops before leaving to make our way to Milan & the
Italian Lakes district of Lugano, Switzerland.
Must run ... munchie time! :)

Bring out your dead...
See this at firehouse.com.
I'm reminded of the Monty Python script where the dead wagon is going around collecting bodies of those dead from the plauge, and one guy tries to put in his dad even though he's not really dead yet.
On other fronts I'm spending my weekend digitizing some super 8 video tape. I'm using an ATI tvwonder pro as the conversion harware. I'll let you know how it goes. Some of that video will get posted to www.skiamigos.com and other to skiamigos.blogger.com .
The Strathmore Rural Fire Department has been quiet this week. Nothing since middle of last week. We are stalled at 90 calls for the year. We had aniticpated 100 calls this year. 2 more weeks until our year end.

Thursday... all day.
Good day.
Nothing stellar to report today.
The SRFFA (Strathmore Rural FireFighters Association) held their 4th annual ladies night out event on Saturday night. A highly successful event. Total revenues aroung $23,000. Total profit around $13,000. Not too shabby.
Last year we used $10,000 to help our fire protection board purchase a new set of Amkus powered hydraulic rescue tools. To be honest, we have yet to use them other than for training purposes which is fine by me. We've done our share of cutting people out this year.
We are wrapping up our VFIS driver training certifications in the next 3 weeks.
For those of you following along to see how many millions I'm making with my banner ads and ad words.... Grand total of about $6 this month. Go ahead click on the banner ads. Please. The good people who put them there want you to see their sites... I'll be sure to send you your cut.
I'll be watching Hurricane Wilma over the next couple of days. We've got a beach house booked on the southern Mayan Riviera (near Tulum) for the end of January. I hope there will be something left to go to. We are going to stay at Casa Jihae. Good thing I bought that cancelation insurance.
More later if I'm feeling like it.

Home at last
Houston traffic sucks!
It took me an hour of driving on interstate freeways to get out of the bulk of the city. I stopped at a strip mall to get gas and a bite to eat. 260 miles from Houston to My final destination in Irving Texas.
I stopped at the Sam Houston Memorial Park to see the worlds largest statue (or so they claim). the interperitive center was closed, so I had to pee on the statue.... ok near the statue in the bushes.
I ended up finding a place to stay in Ennis Texas. I was too tired to log in, so I just crashed. I got up bright and early and challages the rush hour traffic in Dallas. Its not AS bad as Houston, but its no picnick. I did my thing in Dallas and then found that there are unmarked toll booths in Dallas. I had no idea that I was on a toll freeway until it was time to get off. I blew through a toll booth, and I suspect I'll get a big nasty bill in the mail for that one.
I was hoping to get an early flight home, but no luck. I had to kill the better part of 5 hours at the airport. I did what any sensible Canadian would. I drank beer. 4 light beers wasn't enough to make me take my clothes off, but it was enough to make me think that getting a haircut at the airport was a good idea. It turned out ok, but I paid $30.00 USD for the privledge.
1 hour 33 minutes to Denver, and then off to Caglary. I could feel that I was getting sick. It turns out I was right. Today as I type this, I have no voice. I'm hoping to be back to work tommorow with my voice back.
I had a confrence call this morning. It sounds like I'll be back in Houston in 3 weeks.
I'm going to get some more drugs. More later.

Cajun Crab Shack
Today was ok.
I started out by getting lost. an hour later I found myself. Damn that Neverlost GPS system!!!
At any rate. I spent my day in a van underneath a Medium Voltage power pole doing performance benchmarking. Lets say that I didn't really enjoy the experience. It was about 102 degrees and about 90% humidity.... I"m not used to that kind of environment, and obviously didn't drink enough water. I felt aweful by the end of the day.
I had lunch at a the Cajun Crab Shack. I had a Roast Beef Po-boy, and red beans and rice with sausage. yummy.
A nap, some asprin, and about a gallon of water and I feel like a new man!
I went for a drive, saw some of sugarland, and a couple of other cities too. I found a Walmart, and dropped a hunderd bucks on jeans, shoes, some kids videos, and some momento toys for my boy.
Tommorow I'll check out before breakfast, and gear up for another day in the van.
When I'm done, I head for Dallas..... a lovely 4 hour drive.... More about THAT tommorow after I get settled.
Buh-bye.

8 Freaking lanes wide
I'm just over an hour into my flight to Dallas. I've got all my logistics sorted out for my drive to the hotel. The George W Bush Airport sits right beside Interstate 59. My hotel is on interstate 59. I'm a happy guy. I used Google earth's cache feature to grab up the detail imgagery and road topology this afternoon before I left, so I've got very detailed maps of my route. In addition, I have imagery of the office building I'll be working out of, and the work site I'll be visiting. 5 years ago, this technology didn't exist. I'm really pumped about it.
My flight is almost empty (except for first class). So much so that they asked for 6 volunteers to move to the back of the plane to help to even the weight distribution. No skin off my back, and they bought me a drink for the trouble.
I'm fliying today on a Bombardier CRJ 705. I think it just about brand new. Comfortable leather seats, ample leg room. My only reservation is the width of the seats. My shoulders touch the wall of the jet, and extend well over the armrest in the center.
The seat in front of me has a sticket on it which claims a digital AV system is going to be installed soon. Big whoop. I need internet please Air Canada!
My flight number was 8104. I think we are getting in a bit ahead of schedule at just past 11:00 pm CST.
I likely won't post this until sometime Tuesday evening. I will likely have added My days events from Tuesday.
Off.
On.
I'm back. Its Tuesday evening. I had authentic TexMex fast food for dinner. It tasted good. I even washed it down with an XX. I can't spell it.
Tommorow I get to spend the day swatting mosquito's under a power pole near interstate 59.... Long story... I'll tell more once its less 'sensitive'...
The hotel here is kinda freaky. Its mostly full of Evacuee's from Louisiana.
I overheard a cashier at the restraunt complaining that a group of people didn't leave a tip, and that she remembered them from yesterday and added that they had paid with coupons. Implying that they were there there on Fema's dime. It bugged me. I mean if they could go home, I'm sure they would.
It took me to another thought. How long would I be able to sustain myself if my city was suddenly obliterated. A month, two?
Anyways. Why I started... 8 freaking lanes wide. I was on a freeway today that had at least 8 lanes, plus about a dozen more looping over top, underneath, around, beside, etc. I took a pic. I'll post it shortly.

Houston...
I'm off to Houston tommorow afternoon.
Should prove to be an exciting week. I am really looking forward to it. I've never been to Texas.
I'm spending the week working with some new technology. I will be working with some other newly minted experts to optimize a technology trial for a company there. You'll forgive the lack of detail included here. Its still a bit sensitive.
Turkey was outstanding this afternoon. Good company, good food. The boys played there hearts out, and are all pooped I'm sure. At around 6:30 we made call #88 for the year. A Semi vs. ? about 20 miles east of Strathmore on Hiway 1. Nothing too serious by the sounds of it. We got only about half way there before getting stood down. The medics took at least 1 patient for further attention.
I think I'll hop in the shower now and get the smell of fire off of me. If I was a betting man, I'd say that I'll be out again before the sun rises, so maybe no reason to get clean.
Oh yeah... about the millions I'll be making by blogging... I signed up for Chikita mini mall store banners to add here. My google ad's here and on my websites neted me $0.07 today. Not bad for 8 hours work. 200 impressions and 1 click through. I think it was the administrator of www.skiamigos.com testing the banner.. sigh. The Chikita mini mall code should be available on line in the next 48 hours. I'll report on how that goes. I don't think I'll add it to my web sites. I'll just keep it here in my 2 blogs. I got a comment here, but it looks like spam to me. If you are reading this. Post a comment and let me know how you found it.
More tommorow? Maybe Tuesday after I'm done for the day in Houston.

Turkey day
Its Canadian Thanksgiving.
My family is sleeping. The quiet of the house gives me a few minutes to really reflect on what I have to be thankful for.....
I'm not going to bore ANYONE by listing those things.
I played hockey Friday night. We (the Strathmore RCMP Men's hockey team) won. That makes us 2-0 for this season. Pretty darned exciting considering that we went just around .500 all of last year. I got dumped going to the net by some large limited intellegence defenseman. I've got the bruises on my back to prove it.
Hockey being back inspired me to get my son a pair of skates and a helmet. We did just that Sarutday morning at Sports Swap in Calgary. $42.80 later, and we were off to the Strathmore Arena(s) to enjoy the Alberta Centennial free skate afternoon. It didn't really go all that well. In fact, he ended up laying on the ice 'eating snow'. Small steps I suppose.
Remember the chicken recipie I had offered up? I prepared it Saturday evening for a couple we are friends with. It was a smash hit!!! I highly recomend it. We also enjoyed home-made Marinara sauce on angle hair noodles, and fresh broccoli. For dessert, a store made coconut cream pie.. Not home made but delicious none the less.
Dirk brought a lovley six pack of Vancouver Island Brewery's Pipers Pale Ale, and Nancy a pumkin bannana walnut loaf. I'm enjoying that with my morning coffee. My wife has given me strict instructions that I wasn't to go to Tim Horton's for coffee this morning. Something about "the second you leave, your son wakes up and is looking for you" Its now 9:00 am, and they are both still sleeping. I feel a bit ripped off.
Ah yes. I almost forgot. Today being Turkey day. We are hosting my brother-in-law's family and my mother-in-law for turkey dinner. Its a great day! I get to suck him into helping me move a fridge to the basement!!!
My next task for this morning is to modify the web pages for the SRFD. Have to include our 86th and 87th calls and post the old rescue truck as being off the market.

The weekend..
Its here. The Weekend.
Today started with an early morning fire call. Semi rollover on Hiway 1 east of Strathmore just east of Hiway 21. Driver fell alseep and went for the ride of his life.
I met my friend Dirk for lunch today at the Old Spagetti Factory. Our mission to bribe the bartender into teaching us how to make margarita's for our upcoming mexican themed ladies night out fundraiser. Mission complete. Not only did he teach us, he gave us 5 gallons of margarita pre-mix for our slurpee machine...
We were so impressed with our success, that we decided that going back to work would be a bad idea. We ended up at Cinescape at Eau Claire market to terminate some bad guys in the virtual sense. I did make it back to work eventually.
Aside from the regular work stuff, I spent this afternoon searching for a good recipie to prepare for Dirk and his lovely wife tommorow night.
I found this.
Rolled Chicken
6-large boneless chicken breasts
12-slices proscuitto (or black forest ham)
12-slices smoked Gouda cheese
Chili pepper flakes
Fresh ground black pepper
Parsley flakes
2-eggs
1/2-cup flour
1-cup vegetable oil
1/4 sweet red pepper, slivered thin
Bread Crumb Mixture
1-cup breadcrumbs
1/2-tsp garlic powder
1/2-tsp seasoning salt
1/2-tsp fresh ground black pepper
1-1/2 tsp Italian seasoning Rolled Chicken
Pound the chicken breasts thin
Lay 2 slices of proscuitto on each breast
Lay 2 slices of cheese on each breast
Sprinkle each breast with chili pepper flakes, garlic powder, and black pepper
Place a few strips of the red pepper on each piece of chicken
Roll up each breast and hold together with toothpicks
Mix the breadcrumbs, garlic powder, seasoning salt, black pepper, and Italian seasoning in shallow dish
Whisk the 2 eggs together in a separate dish
Place the flour in another shallow dish
Dip each breast into flour, then egg, and then breadcrumb mixture
Heat vegetable oil in large fry pan
Brown each breast in the fry pan
Place the chicken in a shallow casserole dish and bake for 30-40 minutes in a 350* oven
I've lost the original link from where I got the recipie, but that's ok. I'm not sure that copywrite applies here.
I'm going to make this meal my own by adding love.
I'm out for the weekend.. I have to get my skates sharpenedas I play game # 2 tonight in the east of Calgary recrational mens hockey leauge. Nothing at stake, just some old guys reliving their youth. If your interested, we are playing at INDUS at 21:45.
Happy Turkey day on Monday for those of you in Canada.

Our mission to bribe the bartender into teaching us how to make margarita's for our upcoming mexican themed ladies night out fundraiser. Mission complete. Not only did he teach us, he gave us 5 gallons of margarita pre-mix for our slurpee machine...
We were so impressed with our success, that we decided that going back to work would be a bad idea. We ended up at Cinescape at Eau Claire market to terminate some bad guys in the virtual sense. I did make it back to work eventually.
Aside from the regular work stuff, I spent this afternoon searching for a good recipie to prepare for Dirk and his lovely wife tommorow night.
I found this.
Rolled Chicken
6-large boneless chicken breasts
12-slices proscuitto (or black forest ham)
12-slices smoked Gouda cheese
Chili pepper flakes
Fresh ground black pepper
Parsley flakes
2-eggs
1/2-cup flour
1-cup vegetable oil
1/4 sweet red pepper, slivered thin
Bread Crumb Mixture
1-cup breadcrumbs
1/2-tsp garlic powder
1/2-tsp seasoning salt
1/2-tsp fresh ground black pepper
1-1/2 tsp Italian seasoning Rolled Chicken
Pound the chicken breasts thin
Lay 2 slices of proscuitto on each breast
Lay 2 slices of cheese on each breast
Sprinkle each breast with chili pepper flakes, garlic powder, and black pepper
Place a few strips of the red pepper on each piece of chicken
Roll up each breast and hold together with toothpicks
Mix the breadcrumbs, garlic powder, seasoning salt, black pepper, and Italian seasoning in shallow dish
Whisk the 2 eggs together in a separate dish
Place the flour in another shallow dish
Dip each breast into flour, then egg, and then breadcrumb mixture
Heat vegetable oil in large fry pan
Brown each breast in the fry pan
Place the chicken in a shallow casserole dish and bake for 30-40 minutes in a 350* oven
I've lost the original link from where I got the recipie, but that's ok. I'm not sure that copywrite applies here.
I'm going to make this meal my own by adding love.
