Google Gears not supported in Firefox 3.6 - updated

Last week I wrote about the new Firefix 3.6 browser not being supported by google gears.

My biggest reason for noticing was that google latitude wasn't detecting my location based on wifi location anymore.  The other big application affected is the gmail offline access.

Google has since stated that gears is essential dead for new development, and that HTML5 is the next best thing.

And, it seems that latitude is now supporting the location API in  Firefox 3.6 since somewhere near Friday the 29th of January.

That's all that I know for now.

Quality of life high in Strathmore

Technology is a wonderful thing.  I get to read the articles that will appear in the paper tomorrow, today. I use Google Alerts to define a list of keywords I want to be notified about. News stories, Blogs, Web pages all get scanned by the google machine and I get a neat tidy email summary of the things that match. Wow.

Here's one that will be in tomorrow's Strathmore Standard.  Wheee!

Posted today in the Strathmore Standard.

Quality of life high in Strathmore

Kirsten Mundy
Standard Editor
Strathmore residents, groups and organizations have spoken, and it would turn out the town is fairly well equipped to offer a very high quality of life.
At least, that's what the results of a Quality of Life survey would indicate.
"I've been doing this for years and this is the best response I've ever seen," said Michael Roma, a partner with RC Strategies. "It gives us a good margin of error."
Of 5,677 surveys mailed out to homes, 953 were filled out and returned. That means about 17 per cent of Strathmore residents took the time to fill out the multi-page survey, questioning them about all aspects of recreational facilities and parks.
"There were no red flags in it for sure," said Roma. "Nothing was really negative."
The process through which these results were achieved was not just the household study. Starting in August, a committee was formed with members of Town Council, members of the community and staff. RC Strategies started the process by having various different experts go through Strathmore and assess what was already available. Then, the survey was sent out, at the same time RC Strategies met with various different groups and organizations. The results were then complied, and presented to the public last week.
There was an exit survey for those who attended the open house last Tuesday, and those results will also be compiled before the final presentation is made to council at their Feb. 3 council meeting.
"The most important thing about this is it's just a guidance document," said Councellor Brad Walls, who sits on the committee. "This doesn't tie council's hands."
Walls explained that this document will replace a previous Quality of Life Master Plan, and will give council the information they need to determine which projects should be done, and when.

They, however, are not bound by this document and are able to work using it as a guide.
"It's good for a third party to review it," said Walls.
RC Strategies commended council for having a Quality of Life Master Plan, and said it gives municipalities a chance to see the development in their town with fresh eyes. It means those who express their views the loudest or who keep quiet are heard equally.
As for the results, Walls said for the most part they were what they expected.
"A lot of the things on the survey that were recognized, I believe council is working towards already," said Walls. "Trails and paths are something I believe this council really believes in. I don't think any of us expected that bowling alley would be so close to the top of the list."
Walls explained that there were 10 priorities identified for outdoor and indoor facilities, and a bowling alley was seventh on the list for indoor spaces. Roma said that is likely because at one point, there was a bowling alley in town.
Since its departure, people have noticed more how much they enjoyed having it. Walls said the town won't likely be looking at building a bowling alley though, as it is generally taken on by the private sector.

I read this quote by a dude named Gover over on Wired.com about a story on the rumored apple tablet testing that might be going on.   It made milk come out of my nose.

If Apple put out an egg-shaped device with spikes on it that got real hot, and called it the iButtPlug, the day after release thousands of Apple cultists would be grimacing and uncomfortably shuffling around with blood stains on the seat of their pants.
People will buy it because Apple made it. Then they’ll find a reason to need it.

HiPhone in Canada

These are some photo's of my Hiphone. Some people call the Sciphones. I'll start by telling you what it isn't. It isn't an Apple iPhone. it doesn't run apple software, and it doesn't interface with iTunes. It won't run on HSPA or CDMA networks

There is the downside. The upside is big.

1. Its cheap.
2. It LOOKS like an iphone. It is the same form factor, and approxomate weight. The screen is 3.2 inches instead of 3.5

3. IT has removable, replaceable 1200mha lithium ion batterys.
4. It has a very capable video player imbedded. avi, 3gp, mp4, etc
5. It has a good mp3 player
6. It has a 1.3mp camera / video camera
7. It has an FM receiver
8. You can install and run java applications. This means that the sky is the limit. Opera browser, Facebook mobile, etc, etc, etc.
9. It supports dual sim cards. You can have 2 phone numbers or a north american sim and a european sim.
10. It is a quad band GSM phone. It will work on any GSM network.
11. You can use it as a flash drive
12. you can use it as a webcam
13. Its got a sound recorded for dictating files
14. Its got an e-book reader
15. You can get a cool phone cheap that will work on the pay and talk networks Rogers, Fido, Wind, and any of the other carriers who use GSM.

There is probably more good stuff too, but I've only had mine a couple of weeks, and I don't have a data plan for it yet, so I can't comment on the internet connected stuff.

I think you should get one. Let me know if you are interested. randyserious@gmail.com

Google Gears not supported in Firefox 3.6

If you are a big fan of google latitude like I am, then you'll be disapointed to hear the the release of firefox 3.6 doesn't support google gears. Or rather Google Gears doesn't yet support Firefox 3.6.

This means that your location awareness in gmail, laitude, etc will not function under FF3.6. On the bright side, the new FF3.6 does have a location awareness API that can be utilized to gather your location based on wifi tower or your GPS.

The other downside to not having gears support is that your gmail offline access no longer functions. While I'm highly confident this will not last long, I am feeling a bit naked without these 2 features.

On the upside, FF 3.6 now has a dedicated JavaScript processing engine which speeds rendering of those interactive web pages we all love so much. Firefox Persona's are now included as part of the core tool whereas it used to be an add on.

Stay tuned for more FF 3.6 updates.

Here's something I'm really excited about.

As many of you know, I've been dabbling in Importing electronics from China.

Here's one that's got me really excited.  You take this baby out of its box, a quick configuration to associate it to your home wireless network, you visit a website and pick your favorite stations (for free) and off you go. Streaming audio from around the globe, an iphone docking station with charger, plug in your usb memory stick and play your mp3's from there, and its an FM receiver (NOT a FM Transmitter.... sorry for the typo). But wait there's more... Ok, actually there's not. But its a pretty cool gadget.

Its so easy, your mom could use it. Its so cool, you'll want one for yourself.

Interesting in getting one? send me an email. randyserious@gmail.com

G.Love and Special Sauce

I stumbled across a new band. G.Love and Special Sauce.  The song that turned me on to them is Missing my baby of the album Lemonade.

I think its going to make my favorites list and probably a 2010 skiamigos.com CD.

Here's their Bio.

G. Love & Special Sauce are a Philadelphia-based trio whose laid-back, sloppy blues sound is quite unique, as it encompasses the sound/production of classic R&B and recent rap artists (the Beastie Boys, in particular). The group -- G. Love (born Garrett Dutton) on guitar/vocals/harmonica, Jeff Clemens on drums, and Jim Prescott on upright bass -- released their self-titled debut in 1994 on OKeh/Epic. It received enthusiastic reviews and nearly went gold on the strength of the MTV-spun video for "Cold Beverage." The group toured heavily, also landing a subsequent spot on the H.O.R.D.E. tour, and found a receptive young audience. They followed up this success with the more mature Coast to Coast Motel in 1995. Although it didn't sell as well as the debut, it was definitely a stronger album. On tour, the group nearly broke up due to bickering over finances. They decided to take a break from each other, while G. Love worked on a new album with three different bands (All Fellas Band, Philly Cartel, and King's Court) and special guest Dr. John.

Soon, though, G. Love & Special Sauce made amends, and the next album featured Special Sauce plus combinations of the three other groups.
Yeah, It's That Easy was released in October 1997, and it turned out to be a soul-inflected effort, more similar to the debut than their second album. G. Love & Special Sauce soon embarked on another world tour, returning in 1999 with Philadelphonic. Released in 2001, Electric Mile was another solid release, but it was also G. Love's most schizophrenic yet, incorporating hip-hip, funk, psychedelia, blues, and soul in equal and ambitious measure. Mile was followed by extensive touring. By 2004 and the Hustle LP, G. Love had eased up a little on the kitchen sink approach, offering instead a cohesive, dry groove reminiscent of his earliest efforts. Hustle was also the first G. Love release under Jack Johnson's Brushfire Records banner. It made sense; the two had been pals at least since Philadelphonic, on which Johnson had guested. His move from Sony spawned The Best of G. Love and Special Sauce, but G. Love wasn't done. Special Sauce did a series of shows in 2004 with Johnson and fellow Brushfire artist Donavon Frankenreiter, and the trio also found time to issue a brief live EP before 2006's Lemonade. The live album A Year and a Night with G. Love and Special Sauce appeared in 2007. The studio album Superhero Brother followed in 2008. ~ Greg Prato, All Music Guide

Frustrated trying to get the native gmail application working on your windows mobile 6.1 handset?

I've had my LG i910 smart phone almost a year now. It runs Windows Mobile 6.1.  I've been using the messaging application to gather my gmail, but like all those who are googleites I wanted to use the native gmail application like you can on iphone and blackberry.

I found an instruction description which worked for me.  There are a few nuances to the process which I'll try and describe here.

The original blog post is here. Thanks to Sherif  for posing the instructions.

The problem is that Windows mobile 6.1 doesn't have a Java Runtime Engine (JRE), so when you try and download the gmail.jad file, there is no program associated with it to launch and handle the code.

IBM has been kind enough to publish a Windows mobile compatible JRE. The file can be found by clicking here: IBM MIDP 2.0 Java Emulator V2.3.CAB. You should be automatically prompted to install the CAB.

Now visit the Google mobile site and download the gmail.jar file. http://gmail.com/app/v2.0.6/L1/gmail-g.jar

This should now launch the IBM MIDP application and give you a tidy Gmail - 2.0.6 menu. I was tempted to choose install, but I found that choosing the Actions menu and then the Launch option was better.

You should be prompted for a gmail login. The text fields look like they should accept text, but when you use the text input, nothing happens. You must tap the email address and password fields to open an input screen. After logging in, I was prompted to authorize gmail to access the data network until gmail is closed. I liked this option. I had to explicitly allow the app to access the data app.

Feel free to leave comments below with questions. I'll help as much as I am able.

New BMW or Jet ?

Now it will be way harder to choose.   The Sonex company has attached a small jet engine to its sonex airframe at a very reasonable forecasted price of $60K USD.

If the thing actually flies, it will be pretty cool.  The range has some limitations, but I think in time it will improve to the point where you could hope to blast to Banff for lunch.

Here's text fromthe company's web site:

Successful Engine Runs!
The Hornets' Nest R&D team is pleased to announce that, on Friday December 18, the SubSonex PBS TJ-100 engine was successfully started and run. A total of three runs were made throughout the day, including one with power settings between 80-100 percent. The video at right tells the story... be sure to turn your computer's volume all-the-way up for the full experience!

The PBS TJ-100 jet engine was received on Tuesday, December 8th. Due to the superior packaging and documentation provided for the engine by the PBS factory, the SubSonex was well prepared (11/25/09 Update). The installation went very smoothly, allowing first runs just 8 working days after taking delivery of the engine.
Now that the engine has been successfully installed and run, the SubSonex prototype awaits FAA airworthiness inspection. The Hornets' Nest team also anticipates weather-related delays before first-flight, due to the inhospitable Northeast Wisconsin climate this time of year

I for one can't wait to see it fly.
